Be Vigilant against New Tactic for Impersonating Officials: Alleging You “Spreading News on Tai Po Fire” or “Raising Funds Illegally in Mainland”

Recently, scammers who impersonate Mainland public security officers or HKSAR government officials call Hongkongers, making false allegations such as “You made posts in the Mainland to raise funds illegally on the pretext of the Tai Po fire.”, “You spread news on the Tai Po fire, and are suspected of committing illegal acts.”. By inventing such excuses, scammers threaten victims with the requirement of travelling to the Mainland immediately to facilitate investigations. They also demand personal data, cash or transfers of money, and even ask victims to install malware.
